The main difference between workgroups and domains is how resources on the network are managed. Computers on home networks are usually part of a workgroup, and computers on workplace networks are usually part of a domain. In Windows 7, workgroups are small networks that share files, printers and Internet connections. After the other computers in your network join the workgroup, their users can share these resources without having to manually set up sharing, permissions and printers.
Right-click Computer. Click Properties. In the Properties window, under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, see the name of your workgroup. Windows shares information about the Homegroup and how you can use it to share with others on your network. The workgroup can be joined by computers with diverse operating systems.
A workgroup is a peer-to-peer network using Microsoft software. A workgroup allows all participating and connected systems to access shared resources such as files, system resources and printers.
