I want to listen to streaming music in a browser over lte while in the park. No matter what setting I choose the damn thing sleeps. As stated by others the only option is to keep everything on, including the nice power hungry screen.
In fact even just turning down the brightness leaves you in a hole, as then you cant find the controls to interact with the gui again. Not a very well thought out scheme it seems. Either that or bad interface, points of confusion and function duplication in control panel versus tablet computer settings. Hmmmm very frustrating over all.

Sleep states allow the computer to enter low-power modes after a period of inactivity. The S3 sleep state is the default sleep state for Windows platforms. The S3 sleep state consumes only enough power to preserve memory contents and allow the computer to resume working quickly. Very few platforms support the S1 or S2 Sleep states. Connected standby allows the computer to enter a low-power mode in which it is always on and connected.
If supported, connected standby is used instead of system sleep states. Effective processor power management enables the computer to automatically balance performance and energy consumption. This utility is used to turn off the monitor for PC, notebook, or netbook which has a monitor. Just run the program, then your monitor will be turned off.
I quote from a MS document known as: optimizing-windows-applications-for-connected-standby. It does this by suspending all applications in the user session and throttling all 3rd party services to create predictable power usage over the period of idle time. This enables systems that support connected standby to deliver minimized resource usage and long, consistent battery life while enabling Windows 8 Modern UI apps to deliver the connected experiences they promise.
It's not quite the same as "sleep" as we've known it in the past, but unless your application complies with "connected standby", it may just as well be, because it seems that it will be suspended at the same time as the display switches off. I guess that the "Edit Plan" window was modified just enough to tie "sleep" and "display off" together without actually telling the user what is going on.
The Desktop Activity Moderator driver seems to be the main culprit for this particular behavior on several brands of tablets that use Clovertrail processors. It is enabled as part of W8 boot up process when the processor lets Windows 8 know that it is capable of "connected standby".
Stopping DAM. If the information concerning this command is accurate, dam. So far, dam. Then, I repeated my setup of the "display off" and "sleep" parameters as before, using powercfg instructions at the command prompt:. So now, the display switches off, and my old school desktop applications continue to work, because the tablet never goes to sleep, just like I asked it to, and the "Edit Plan" window won't let me do.
Battery life is still going to be very long unless the final gotcha is that these settings won't work in "dc" , because the Clovertrail processor sips power compared with the earlier Atoms, and having the display turned off while still "computing" lowers power consumption considerably. It doesn't change the values that you find in the "Edit Plan" window of Power Options.
That's why I think it qualifies as a hack. I don't dare enable those yet in case it shuts down the magic, though I guess I will mess with that, sooner or later, once I'm confident this is repeatable. I want you to know that you have created one of the most well articulated threads that I have recently found.
YOur command of the written word to describe the issue and attempts to solve it are impressive. For that, I thank you! Having said that, I still don't mind you using the term "hack" to describe using the command line to "override" the GUI Instead, I just see it as you have found a "bug" and worked your way around it until some patch if ever comes along and corrects the oversight. I simply wanted to be able to set my display to go off without having to log back in each time I re-engaged.
I just don't want sleep mode to be entered so quickly. I have followed your instruction to disable DAM and use "powercfg" to change monitor-timeout-ac to 1min, while standby-timeout-ac sleep to 0 never , i have turned on "uTorrent" and waited 1 minute to screen to turn off, then another 2 minutes to wake up the machine, I found out that the uTorrent download speed has dropped to 0kbps and starting to pick up the speed, it seems that the machine has gone to sleep.
When your "wake up" your machine from "screen off", do you have a windows 8 lockscreen that you need to swipe upward to go back to desktop? Mine does have that lock screen. I was thinking, if the machine didn't sleep, it should not have the swipe up lock screen in place after come back from "screen off".
I really want this to work, that's the main purpose I bought this Full Win8 Tablet, so I can have it as low power download machine and support remote connection when screen is off. I have tried many ways, including using nircmd, but this is the only way to turn off the monitor without putting the device to sleep:. Create a shortcut to this on the desktop. Whenever you need to turn off the monitor without putting the device to sleep, double tap on the shortcut.
Using a mouse will not do as the mouse movement will stop the screen saver immediately and turn the screen back on. Using the scrnsave. By default, using the screensaver scrnsave.
However, when I enter screensaver settings, then Settings, then Display Settings, I am able to select "Display nothing on this monitor". I do this for all my monitors, but strangely, only the main monitor actually follows the setting and turns off. All the other monitors just display black. For a single monitor system, this might be sufficient.
Edit: Forget what I wrote above. I just read somewhere that some monitors turn off automatically when displaying black while others do not. Tested it, and actually, this is what is happening to my LG main monitor vs the other two Acer monitors. I can not get massage and calls from Skype , yahoo massager and viber when display be off.
